What Is Dental Caries and How Can They Be Prevented?

Dental caries, also known as tooth decay or cavities, are spots on your teeth where the enamel (the hard, outer layer) gets damaged. This happens when bacteria in your mouth use the sugar from the food you eat to make acids. These acids then wear down the enamel and create holes in your teeth.

How to Prevent Dental Caries

Brush and Floss Regularly: Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss once a day to remove plaque (a sticky film of bacteria) and food bits between your teeth.

Cut Down on Sugary Foods: Try to eat less candy, soda, and other sugary foods. Too much sugar can make more acids that harm your teeth.

Use Fluoride: Fluoride helps make your tooth enamel stronger and more resistant to acid. Use fluoride toothpaste and follow your dentist’s advice on other fluoride treatments if needed.

Visit the Dentist: Go to the dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. This allows us to spot any issues early on, so they don’t turn into bigger problems later.

Get Sealants: Dental sealants are special coatings put on the chewing surfaces of your back teeth to protect them from bacteria and acids.

Eat a Healthy Diet: Eat a variety of healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. Foods rich in calcium and phosphorus, like milk and cheese, help keep your enamel strong.
